SSD Buying Guide: NVMe vs SATA, Which SSD Should You Buy?

An SSD is the single best upgrade for any computer. But NVMe or SATA, M.2 or 2.5-inch, 500GB or 1TB? This guide explains everything you need to choose the right SSD in Bangladesh.

SSD vs Hard Disk

A hard disk (HDD) reads at around 100-150MB/s. Even a basic SATA SSD reads at about 500MB/s, and NVMe SSDs reach 2,000-7,000MB/s or more. The result: Windows boots in seconds, apps open instantly and the whole computer feels new.

SATA SSD (2.5-inch)

  • Speed up to about 550MB/s.
  • Fits almost every laptop and desktop with a hard disk bay.
  • The best upgrade for older computers without an M.2 slot.

NVMe M.2 SSD

  • PCIe 3.0: up to about 3,500MB/s, great value.
  • PCIe 4.0: up to about 7,000MB/s, ideal for most new PCs and laptops.
  • PCIe 5.0: the fastest, for high-end workstations and enthusiasts.
  • Check your motherboard or laptop supports M.2 NVMe; some M.2 slots only accept SATA.

Form Factor: 2280 vs 2242/2230

Most desktops and laptops use M.2 2280 (80mm long). Some thin laptops and handhelds use shorter 2242 or 2230 drives. Check your device's manual before buying.

How Much Capacity?

UseRecommended
Office PC boot drive256-500GB
Laptop for study and work500GB-1TB
Gaming PC1TB-2TB
Video editing2TB+ NVMe

Other Things to Check

  • TBW (endurance): higher TBW means the SSD lasts longer under heavy writing.
  • DRAM cache: keeps speed consistent during large file transfers.
  • Heatsink: useful for PCIe 4.0/5.0 drives in desktops.
  • Backups: warranty replaces the drive, not your data. Keep a backup.
